What absence control programs are your colleagues using?

Respondents to the 2007 CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey were asked, "What other absence control policies or programs, if any, does your company employ?" The range of responses was wide and demonstrated great creativity among participating organizations. One organization, for example, focuses on rewarding good attendance by entering those employees who have not been absent for an entire calendar year into a random drawing for a new $25K car. Another organization makes the employees responsible for finding their own coverage when they are unexpectedly absent.

Here is what other survey respondents had to say:

• "Accumulated sick leave can be credited toward years of service at the time of retirement."

• "Any unscheduled off time during the 90-day orientation period is grounds for immediate termination."

• "We allow a portion of the unused PTO to be rolled over into the employee's 401K pension account."

• "Doctor’s note for absence exceeding 3 days."

• "Coaching/Warning for unexcused absences that could result in termination."

• "Attendance is tied to Gainsharing bonus and perfect attendance gifts."

• "Non-exempt staff lose pay once they run out of paid leave time."

• "Pay for performance creates its own control policy."

• "Unused sick time can be used to pay health insurance premiums upon retirement."

• "We use trust and good hiring practices."
