SSA renews computer matching program with CMS

The Social Security Administration is soliciting comments about renewing a computer matching program that is set to expire on January 31, 2015. The computer matching program is with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Notice of the pending renewal appears in the July 15, 2014, issue of the Federal Register (79 Fed. Reg. 41347).

The purpose of the matching program is to establish the terms, conditions, and safeguards under which the CMS will disclose to the SSA Medicare identifying and nonutilization information for Social Security Title II beneficiaries aged 90 and above. CMS will identify Medicare enrollees whose records have been inactive for three or more years. The SSA will use the data as an indicator to select and prioritize cases for review to determine continued eligibility to Title II benefits. It will contact the individuals to verify ongoing eligibility. The agency will refer individual cases of suspected fraud, waste, or abuse to the Office of the Inspector General for investigation. The new effective date of the program is August 1, 2014. It will continue for at least 18 months.
