The House of Representatives approved on July 31, 2008, legislation that would block the use of false social security numbers by illegal immigrants seeking employment in the US. The legislation, the Employee Verification Amendment Act of 2008, H.R. 6633, grants a five year extension to the E-Verify system that allows employers to check newly-hired employees' authorization to work under immigration law. Similar legislation is still pending in the Senate.
The E-Verify system uses the SSA’s systems to verify the citizenship and social security numbers to determine if newly-hired employees are eligible to work in the U.S. The E-Verify system is operated by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the SSA. The program has proved so effective that President Bush signed an amendment to an Executive Order on June 6, 2008 requiring more than 200,000 federal contractors to use E-Verify.
