SD minimum wage initiative proposed for November election

South Dakota voters may get to decide on a proposed increase to the state minimum wage, according to an announcement by South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley on the release of the Attorney General’s ballot explanations for the November 4, 2014 General Election.

Initiated Measure 18 proposes to amend the state minimum wage for non-tipped employees from $7.25 per hour to $8.50 per hour on January 1, 2015, with annual increases after that tied to increases in the cost of living.

For tipped employees, the proposed hourly minimum wage would be half of the minimum wage for non-tipped employees, with adjustments annually based on any increase in the cost of living.

Other measures include a proposed requirement that health insurers include all willing and qualified health providers on their provider lists (Initiated Measure 17) and a proposed constitutional amendment to authorize the state Legislature to allow roulette, keno and craps in Deadwood (Constitutional Amendment Q).
