New York tax rates changed; new tables issued

As previously reported, the New York Governor has approved a bill that contains temporary increases to the marginal New York state personal income tax rate for higher-income filers for a three-year period from tax year 2009 to tax year 2011. The marginal rate increases from 6.85% to 7.85% for married couples filing jointly with incomes above $300,000; for head of household filers with incomes above $250,000; and for single taxpayers with income above $200,000. The marginal rate increases to 8.97% for all filers with incomes above $500,000. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has issued revised withholding tables to reflect the changes. The tables are effective for wages paid on after May 1, 2009. The tables are reproduced in this Report Letter on pages 18-24.

Effective May 1, 2009, the supplemental wage rate will be 11.03% for New York state income tax purposes. In addition, the supplemental wage rate for purposes of the Yonkers income tax will be 1.103%.
