What is RSS? RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”. RSS technology lets web publishers syndicate their content as a web feed.
What are the benefits of RSS? If a site offers RSS that means that you can use a news reader or aggregator to collect and view the headlines from that site rather than visit the site each day. Most RSS readers allow you to see headlines, date published, summaries, or even full articles or blog posts. Collecting feeds from all your favorite websites in a news aggregator saves you the time of visiting each site, or generally surfing the web, to keep up with the news that’s important to you. In addition, the RSS feeds you subscribe to will be updated throughout the day, providing you access to the freshest content.
How to get started … The first thing you’ll need is an RSS news reader, or news aggregator. Most popular web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer v.7, have RSS readers built right in. Each time you open your web browser, you can view your collection of current headlines and link out to your favorite news sites to read the full articles.
There are also web-based readers such as MyYahoo, Google Reader or My MSN. The advantage of a web-based reader is that it allows you to access your feeds from any computer with an internet connection.
Downloadable RSS News readers are also available. CCH@Hand is news reader that provides access to CCH’s free RSS feeds as well as CCH’s subscription Tracker News feeds – plus any feed you’d like to add! CCH@Hand can be downloaded from http://athand.cch.com/bc. The site also offers a short FlashDemo highlighting all that CCH@Hand has to offer.
Next you’ll want to subscribe to RSS feeds. How you do this depends on the reader that you’ve chosen. CCH has provided buttons allowing you to easily subscribe to CCH Headline News in the most popular web-based readers. However, some readers will ask you to input the address of the feed you want to subscribe to. If you’ve chosen one of these news readers, simply right-click on the orange XML or RSS icon next to the news feed and select “Copy Shortcut”. Next, paste the RSS URL into your reader to subscribe to the feed.
Now you should be all set. Just open your news reader to view the latest headlines.
