Pension conferees still deadlocked

As we go to press, conferees to the pension reform bill (H.R. 2830) remain deadlocked over provisions pertaining to airline relief and a formula for determining contributions to cash balance pension plans. The stalemate makes it almost certain conferees will not meet their self-imposed deadline to bring a completed conference report to both chambers in time for votes before the July 4, 2006 recess.

The conferees have been meeting since March 2006 in an effort to iron out differences between the Senate-passed pension reform measure and the House-passed bill. However, thus far an accord has proven elusive. The conference committee first set April 15, 2006 as a deadline for completion of an agreement. When that deadline was missed, conferees sought to have conference report finished in time for the Memorial Day recess. Most recently, key lawmakers announced a July 4 deadline for completion of a conference agreement, but this date now appears in jeopardy as well.
