Wisconsin discovers Form WT-7 processing error

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (Department) has discovered that a specific file of Employer's Annual Reconciliation Returns (Form WT-7) was not loaded to its processing system in a timely fashion. The file contained approximately 3,700 returns, which were not processed by the due date of the returns, resulting in the entire population of taxpayers with returns in the file receiving past due notices for their Form WT-7 for tax year 2007. These notices were dated April 21, 2008, and instructed the taxpayer to complete and file a paper Form WT-7 within 15 days.

The Department asks that those who are contacted by a client who may have been affected by this issue call the department at (608) 266-2776 so the Department can confirm receipt of the client’s Form WT-7. After confirmation of receipt, the client may be instructed to disregard the notice. No late filing fees will be charged. Once these returns have been processed, however, penalties and interest may be assessed for other legitimate reasons. Any such assessment would be sent to the taxpayer under separate cover.

The Department is also mailing a letter to each taxpayer affected by this issue with the same information stated above, even if they have already contacted the department regarding these notices. (Wisconsin Department of Revenue News for Practitioners, May 2, 2008.)
