Employers increasingly monitor employee Internet use, reveals SHRM survey

In a survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 58 percent of HR professionals said their organization has increased its monitoring of their employees' Internet use. The survey, responded to by 442 HR professionals, was conducted September 29, 2006.

Survey respondents were asked if their organization has increased employee monitoring within the past 12 months. Fifty-four percent responded "no, and we have no plans to do so," while 10 percent said "no, but we plan to do so." Of the remaining 36 percent of survey respondents who have increased employee monitoring, 27 percent have explained the changes to their employees while nine percent have not.

The survey also asked which activities participating organizations have increased their monitoring of. Fifty-eight percent of respondents reported increasing their monitoring of employee Internet use while increased monitoring was also reported for computer use in general and employee e-mail use, at 48 and 45 percent respectively. Forty-one percent of respondents have increased their auditing of employee expense forms and 30 percent have increased monitoring of employee cell phone use.

Participating HR professionals also reported increased monitoring of: employee telephone use (21 percent); employee instant messaging (13 percent); employees movement at work (12 percent); use of camera cell phones (seven percent); employee emails (five percent); and employee postal mail (one percent).
