Did you know that the total number of people with disabilities age 16 and over is 27 million, nearly 5 million of whom are employed? Did you know that 18.4 percent of people with disabilities ages 16-64 are employed: 30.6 percent are men and 26.9 percent are women? And, did you know that in August 2009, the unemployment rate of persons with a disability was 16.9 percent, compared with 9.3 percent for persons with no disability. October is Disability Employment Awareness Month and it highlights facts such as these, to remind employers of a great, often untapped resource.
"I believe that having a job is a civil right," said Hilda L. Solis, U.S. Secretary of Labor. "Those who are qualified for and want to work should not be denied that right because of an inaccessible building or an outdated set of assumptions about what they can or cannot do."
People with disabilities are an often untapped source of skilled, innovative and dedicated employees. The Employment section of www.Disability.gov offers job seekers, employers, employees and hiring professionals practical information about finding a job, recruiting and hiring people with disabilities and workplace accommodations. It also offers resources on starting a small business and the laws and regulations that protect the employment rights of people with disabilities. In addition, family members and teenagers with disabilities can find information on mentoring programs and job training services.
