More than three-quarters of U.S. workers know someone who's taken FMLA leave, survey shows

More than three-quarters of U.S. employees know someone who has taken Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave, according to a Tell It NowSM poll by ComPsych Corporation. Employees were asked: Do you know someone who has taken FMLA leave? Twenty-three percent said, “Yes, I know of multiple people who have taken leave for differing reasons;'' 20 percent said, “Yes, for personal illness;” 19 percent said, “Yes, to care for a child;” and nine percent of respondents said they know someone who has taken FMLA leave to care for a spouse or relative. Additionally, six percent of respondents said they know someone who has taken FMLA leave, but they believe the reason to be questionable.

Only 23 percent of workers participating in the poll said they do not know anyone who has taken FMLA leave.

“FMLA leave continues to increase, and some companies have as many as one-third of their workforce out on leave at any given time,” said Jim Brown, vice president of FMLASource, an affiliate company of ComPsych. “HR managers in particular struggle with FMLA administration for intermittent leave, where an employee may be out for conditions such as asthma, headaches or allergies,” he added. “And given the complexities of the law, with new military leave requirements and revisions from the Department of Labor recently, FMLA compliance and absence management will continue to be an issue for employers.”
