    Washington enacts military family leave act

    Governor Chris Gregoire signed S.B. 6447 on March 19, 2008 that allows more unpaid leave for military families before or during deployment. For details, see ¶2016K.

    Employers promote use of generic drugs to manage costs, Mercer finds

    While pharmacy benefit cost increases still exceed medical benefit cost increases, the gap has been shrinking steadily as employers have adopted a range of approaches to manage pharmacy benefit costs. Now employers are exploring new ways to improve compliance with prescribed regimens, according to a Mercer survey. For more information, see ¶2016L.

    Supreme Court declines review of EEOC rule on retiree health benefits

    The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to review a decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals that upheld an EEOC rule allowing employers to coordinate retiree health benefits with Medicare without violating the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). The EEOC's final rule became effective on December 26, 2007. For more information, see ¶2016M.

    Talent shortage is top concern of employers, health care costs place second this year in annual survey

    A shortage of skilled and talented workers has become the most pressing concern among employers, supplanting the perennial leading problem, rising cost of health care, according to the 14th annual Top Five Total Rewards Priorities Survey conducted by Deloitte Consulting LLP (Deloitte) and the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists (ISCEBS).     EBSA has issued a proposed regulation providing a model notice for use by multiemployer defined benefit pension plans to notify plan participants and others that the plan is in critical funding status. For more information, please see ¶20,537L.

    IRS issues proposed regulations relating to notice requirements when a plan significantly reduces benefit accruals

    The IRS has issued proposed regulations which would amend the requirements for providing notice to certain affected persons when a plan significantly reduces benefit accruals. For more information, please see ¶20,262J.
