Major employers support health reform that preserves ERISA preemption, survey finds

The ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC) conducted a survey in January 2010 among its membership to better understand their priorities for health care reform. The survey found that major employers overwhelmingly favored health reform that builds upon the employer-based system and preserves the preemption provisions of ERISA.

President Obama signs bill extending COBRA subsidy

On March 2, 2010, President Obama signed the Temporary Extension Act of 2010(H.R. 4691), which extends the eligibility period for the COBRA premium subsidy through March 31, 2010. The eligibility period, as previously extended by the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2010 (P.L. 111-118), had expired on February 28, 2010.

Obama calls for health care reform vote by Congress

President Obama on March 3 called on Congress to cast an up-or-down vote on health care reform legislation "in the next few weeks." Maintaining that Americans deserve a final vote on health care reform, the president pointed to several major pieces of legislation, including the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which Congress passed by a simple majority.

Retiring Americans face $260,000 in health care costs
