When you display your search results "by Document," your search results will be sorted by relevance. This means that search results are displayed in a document list with the best matches appearing at the top.
Search results
will not be ranked by relevance when you choose to display them by Table
of Contents. See also: Displaying your

Each term in the documents is weighted. The weighing factors are based on the frequency of the term throughout the entire data. Words that are rarely used are given a higher weighting factor. Finally, these weighting factors are used to develop the relevance scores for the retrieved documents. In addition, another analysis is made to consider the grouping of adjacent words. That is, documents that have the most rare words closer together will appear higher on your Search Results List.
